Gargett State School is a small school located approximately forty-five minutes South-West of Mackay. The school caters for children from Prep to Year 6 in a multi-age setting. The school staff consists of a teaching Principal and classroom teachers', as well as a team of support staff. Our staff takes pride in our school and its place in the community.
We have effective communication between schools, parents/carers, the community and students forms the foundation in developing and maintain partnerships. Our school also takes on the responsibility to help parents/carers understand the language of learning. We do this through a range of communication tools and channels, including, fortnightly newsletters, our school Facebook page, school website, and showcase evenings. Our school is committed to provide a safe, respectful and discipline learning environment for all students and staff, where students have opportunities to engage in quality learning experiences and acquire values supportive of their lifelong wellbeing.
Our school community has identified the following rules to teach and promote our high standards of responsible behaviour:
- Be safe
- Be Responsible
- Be Respectful
Our school rules have been agreed upon and endorsed by all staff and our school P&C. They are aligned with the values, principles and expected standards outlined in Education Queensland's code of school behaviour.
The Community is supported by the cane and mining industries, with families of workers in these industries making up a large proportion of our children. Gargett is a well equipped school, set against a beautiful backdrop of lush tropical vegetation and leafy green sugar cane. Our school boasts four quality teaching areas, which are all air-conditioned, one fully equipped library, two covered play areas, multi purpose sports area and a large oval. All buildings are connected by a series of covered walkways and we currently have two playgrounds. Our students are lucky enough to have a large sand pit out the back of the covered areas with a sports sheds which holds all resources. Our adventure playground is very popular during lunch breaks and also when we host combined small schools events. The bright colours make it stand out against the healthy green background of our school. We also have spacious, well established and well maintained grounds, along with a new resurfaced tennis court.
We have a ratio of 1 computer to every student, iPads , all of which are constantly updated and regularly serviced, and online learning to extend years three to six students use of learning technology. Computers are maintained and updated by a local Education Queensland technical advisor. Two classrooms boost data boards which are used daily by teaching staff.
The school office/administration building is set at the front of the school to welcome all visitors to our school. The building was built part of the BER Project April 8th, 2011 and originally was called the resource centre. The admin block holds a teaching space which is used by Learning support staff and visiting specialist teachers.
