Gargett SS has a Chaplain.  My name’s Rex.  Since 2008 the Federal Government's National School Chaplaincy and Student Welfare Program (NSCSWP) has funded my role in the school.  I began in 2009.

Chappies have become a valued part of school support programs across Australia and at Gargett I am part of the Staff & Student Support Team that includes the Guidance Officer and School-based Nurse.  Together we provide support to students and teachers in a range of ways, using a number of programs, events, visiting speakers and other relevant resources.

As Chappie, I'm available for students as a 'listening ear', a positive role-model, a supporter through difficult issues and a person they can come to for discussions on religious, spiritual and ethical issues.  Bringing an adult perspective to their concerns can often help students see other options to their dilemmas.

I’m also available to staff where they may be having concerns with students or other issues that are impacting their wellbeing at school.  Similarly, the Chaplaincy service can be utilised by parents to assist with difficulties their children may bring home from their school experiences.  Often home environments can affect how students handle their school days so being available to support, network with other agencies and open up options for families is a valuable aspect of my role.

Christian Chappies like me are a link between the school community and the local churches and bring the Christian perspective to the many complex and confusing issues that challenge our students today.  Being able to spend time, work with and support students having difficulties or questioning why their world doesn't make sense is a role that compliments the teachers' educational role as we look to assist these young people build their futures here at Gargett SS.

At Gargett  your children have the best of support for a quality schooling experience and I am very honoured to be Gargett State School's Chaplain.
